The S4200 are compact access switches for small networks. The S4600 are high-performance L2 access switches with 10G uplinks. The S5750 and CS6200/CS6200X series are L3 (or L3 lite) models for aggregation and core, with OSPF/BGP routing and higher throughput. The choice depends on the device's role in the network.
L2 switches work well in the access layer — connecting end devices and handling VLANs. L3 switches add routing between networks, so they are used in aggregation and core where communication between multiple subnets is required.
VSF (Virtual Switch Framework) combines several physical switches into one logical device managed from a single address. It simplifies configuration, enables link aggregation across chassis and increases resilience — the failure of one device does not interrupt the network.
Models with a "P" in the name (e.g. S4600-52X-P-SI, S5750X-48T6X-P-SI) support PoE/PoE+ (and selected series also PoE++ 802.3bt). They power IP cameras, VoIP phones, access points and sensors without separate power supplies.
