Network infrastructure modernisation for a municipal public transport company

Modernisation of a distributed network for a public transport organisation operating around the clock, with PoE support, monitoring and multiple locations.

Network infrastructure modernisation for a municipal public transport company

Updated 25 May 2026

Highlights

  • Unified the network infrastructure across many locations, including depots, offices and service points.
  • Deployed DCN switches with PoE to support IP cameras, VoIP phones and Wi-Fi access points.
  • Ran DCN technical training for the IT team to increase network-maintenance self-sufficiency.

Key information

  • 24/7 infrastructure operation for transport, ticketing, monitoring and communication systems.
  • Five DCN switch models matched to locations with different traffic intensity.
  • One consistent management platform for the municipal company's distributed infrastructure.

Project context

A municipal transport company providing public transport operates continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fleet management, timetable coordination, ticketing systems, monitoring and communication between field units all rely on smoothly running IT infrastructure.

Key challenges

The most important requirement was operational continuity. Any network outage could directly translate into disruptions to passenger service and the operation of critical systems.

The environment was distributed and varied. The infrastructure had to serve many locations, different throughput requirements and PoE-powered devices, including cameras, VoIP phones and access points.

The IT department needed not only hardware, but also deployment support and the knowledge to maintain the new infrastructure independently.

Deployed solution

A comprehensive modernisation based on enterprise-class DCN switches was carried out. Medium-traffic nodes used the DCN S5750E-26X-SI-R2, while higher-traffic locations used the DCN S5750E-52X-P-SI-R2 and DCN S5750E-52X-SI-R2 models.

In locations requiring end-device power, the DCN S5750E-28X-P-SI-R2 and DCN S5750E-28X-SI-R2 models were used, enabling support for IP cameras, VoIP phones and Wi-Fi access points.

The deployment was complemented by DCN technical training for the company's IT staff.

Deployment results

The new DCN infrastructure reduced the risk of downtime for critical transport-management and monitoring systems. A single platform across the whole organisation made it easier to manage the network in all locations.

PoE support simplified cabling and allowed cameras and access points to be powered directly from the network. Knowledge transfer to the IT team increased self-sufficiency in day-to-day administration.

The project shows that modernising the infrastructure of a 24/7 organisation requires not only good hardware, but also a proven deployment and support model.
